Plaka & Monastiraki

Experience all the culture Athens has to offer in Athens's two most famous neighborhoods! Gastronomy, arts, nightlife, shopping, and much more awaits in the neighborhoods of Plaka and Monastiraki.

The Neighborhoods of Plaka & Monastiraki

Athens is MUCH more than just a famous archeological site. The city has so much to offer in terms of food, nightlife, arts, and shopping. Two of the most famous neighborhoods are Plaka and Monastiraki. Each neighborhood offers similarities but is also distinctive in its own way.

Plaka

Plaka is the oldest neighborhood in Athens. The modern neighborhood is literally built on top of the ancient city. It is not uncommon to see glass floors on the streets or in hotel lobbies, looking down at the ancient city! Some hotels even allow access to the sites below! The neighborhood is full of small shops, and cafes. Rooftop terraces are common where a cocktail or dinner can be enjoyed with views of the Acropolis. Plaka also charms the heart with its tight cobblestone streets. The neighborhood also features some sites worth a visit. The Roman Agora, Hadrians Arch, and the Tower of Winds are all located here. Being the oldest neighborhood in Athens, and its advantageous location within the city, the neighborhood has become more "touristy" over the years. Those looking for a more authentic cultural experience may want to check out other neighborhoods, as well.  However, do not let that stop you from visiting this amazing area!

Monastiraki

The neighborhood of Monastiraki offers a charming atmosphere with a slightly more "local" feel than Plaka, but still a busy hot spot for tourists. Quality food and local cafes can be found throughout the neighborhood. An active nightlife brings the area to life. Roof-top terraces can be found throughout the area offering spectacular views of the Acropolis. Shopping is also a major draw to the neighborhood. Ermou street runs through the heart of the neighborhood, featuring both local and major international brands. Ifestou Street features the Monastiraki flea market.

Some neighborhoods feature steep inclines with walking only paths

MS Recommendations

Both neighborhoods can present a mixed bag of good and difficult when it comes to MS Travelers. The good news is the neighborhoods are easily accessible by Athens's Public transportation systems. Private transport like taxis can also access a large portion of the streets.  However, it is also important to know that some streets are not accessible by vehicle and certain destinations may require walking. It is also important to know some areas can feature hilly streets with sharp inclines and steps. Rocky steps and cobblestone features are not uncommon in these areas.

Certain areas in the neighborhoods are routinely crowded both during the day and night. During the day, the mix of crowds and heat can wear you down faster than expected. At the night, the neighborhoods can become more crowded than the day, but a break from the heat is a plus. I recommended having a companion to help you manage the steps, inclines, and crowds along the way.  Another recommendation is to do research on eateries/bars prior to booking reservations. Many popular eateries can be located in areas that are not accessible to cars if you are physically restricted.

Public bathrooms do exist but can be very hard to find. Generally, most stores and restaurants will be accommodating if you need the restroom, but some do insist on you being a customer. For those with bladder problems, using a catheter prior to your visit and when leaving local restaurants is highly recommended.
